Artist Biography

My name is Katherine Thornton Brown and I am an International Found-Object collage~assemblage artist residing in San Antonio, Texas. I am a full-time artist. (when not juggling my 6 1/2 year old twins!)....from selling on various online galleries to various exhibitions where ever I may be invited!!! I have shown and sold my work in the United States ...as well as exhibitions in Italy and Mexico. I also teach collage~assemblage workshops, photoshop and digital-hybrid printing.

As long as I can remember I have always been fascinated with objects...that is , objects that are merely "objects" such as old forks, buttons, old letters and metal remnants that looked as if it it could have once come from something interesting that may have little or no importance at all to others. I had unusual collections of bugs, colored dirt, rusty "old things", butterfly and moth wings as well as butterfly cocoons...(until they hatched!)

I see so much beauty in objects and remnants that may have been discarded or seem to have no particular use to most...(other than other collage artists who are packrats such as myself!)

Unusual? Definately. However, I am quite sure that these "odd collections" from my childhood have been a profound influence in the majority of the work I produce today.

I spent my teenage years living in Southern Italy. Over the course of four years within a few hours drive or a two hour plane ride, I was able to see so much...which I think definately has had such a tremendous impact in my work. Italian, as well as Mexican cultures have always been an enormous influence in my work...seen through my eyes as an onlooker. I am fascinated by both cultures, their similarities and differences.

My undergraduate studies were completed at The University of Texas at San Antonio where I had my concentration in Digital Printmaking and Photography. I also studied summers in Florence, Italy at the Santa Reparata Graphic Arts Center under the fabulous and recognized printmaker Dennis Olsen.

My art is very mixed media oriented, and always has been...digital "hybrids", half printed digitally and half worked by hand to create"digital originals" in a hybrid state. I incorporate 3-D subject matter on 2-D surfaces. I have also a compelling drive to generate layer upon layer of information. I am very process-oriented and am quite obsessed with creatring layers of information within my artwork...almost like dreams seem to be at times. My work is observations of happenings or occurances in my life...as well as my dream state.

It is not necessary to have people completely understand my art, merely question what is occuring and be able to grasp the feeling that each piece generates.
